Most of David’s best-known paintings are portraits. The Woman in a Turban and the portrait of Antoine and Marie-Anne Lavoisier are the best examples.
He also portrayed contemporary historical events in the convulsed Revolutionary and Napoleonic France. For instance, the Death of Marat, the Tennis Court Oath, and the many portraits of Napoleon. Jacques-Louis David was also inspired by classical myths from Ancient Greece and Rome.
